Dog Crate Review: Find the Perfect Fit for Your Dog
Hello and welcome back to the Lead & Collar Blog, where our goal is to provide high value education and resources for beginner dog owners.
This week we are chatting about crates. There are lots options out there, but I’ve chosen a few specific options that will suit a range of different dog owners.
To simplify things a bit, I've categorised them into three sections:
Soft Crates
Hard Crates
Furniture Crates
But the million-dollar question remains – which one is right for you?
Now, I’m not going to tell you which one to buy, but I can certainly share my thoughts on the matter.
So let’s go!
Soft Crates
These crates are amazing for a light weight travel alternative.
People also use these crates at agility or obedience competitions as a place for their dog to rest up during events as well as at home. I recommend using in conjunction with a hard crate for transport as they provide no protection from crashes or impacts.
My sister, with her duo of a miniature dachshund and a king charles cavalier spaniel, swears by soft crates. And why not? They're perfect for small dogs.
But…and it's a big but, if your dog has anxiety or has high drive to get out of the crate, they might not be for you – those soft walls can be chewed through, leading to a newfound freedom!
In summary, they’re great because:
Ideal for crate loving dogs
Suited for travelling
Light weight
Option 1: Elite Field 3-door Sage Green Soft Dog Crate
It’s a standout in the realm of soft crates and a crowd favourite for good reason. Having undergone our own rigorous testing, it's clear why this crate has secured its popularity.
With a sturdy design crafted from quality materials, the process of setting up and taking down the crate is a seamless affair. Featuring three doors and mesh windows, the crate ensures optimal ventilation, and the attached carrying bag simplifies the task of keeping your pup's belongings organised while on the move.
While the fleece bed might be on the thinner side, it still adds a touch of comfort that doesn't go unnoticed.
Pros:
Light weight
Collapsible
Easy assembly steel tube frame
Carrying bag
Free crate matt
Top, front, and side doors for convenience
Two accessory pockets on the top and side
Well ventilated
Removable and washable cover and mat
Cons:
No crash protection
Not suitable for anxious or high drive dogs who aren’t fans of crates
No insulation from external environmental temperatures
More easily escapable
Hard Crates
Now, here's where I spill the tea: hard crates are the go to for me. Tried, tested, and true with our furry companions, they're the Jack-of-all-trades. Whether we're camping, visiting the folks' farm, or just on a spontaneous ute trip, these crates are the real MVPs.
Perfect from puppies to the largest dog
Ideal for all training levels
Great for travel
Semi or permanently set up areas
Option 1: GUNNER G1 Kennel
Behold the pinnacle – the Rolls-Royce of dog crates.
Crafted from double-wall rotomolded plastic, this crate is a testament to top-tier construction. Boasting 4 tie-down points and 2 carry handles for easy manoeuvring, the large variant even throws in two rollers at the back for a smooth glide.
For the folks always on the move, seeking a safe and secure transport haven for their furry companions, this crate takes the lead.
But wait, there's more – a suite of accessories, including a water bowl and fan kit, to keep your four-legged friend cool and refreshed. Add in the lifetime manufacturer warranty, and you've got yourself a stellar choice.
Now, a couple of pointers for the savvy consumer – thanks to its structural design, the internals feature thick walls, making it larger overall compared to its counterparts. Something to consider when pondering your specific use cases (ie: how much space you have) – all the specs are laid out on the website.
Also keep in mind this crate arrives flat-packed, so you’ll need to assemble it.
Pros:
5 star crash tested
Provides some insulation from outside temperatures due to its construction design
Large range of extras
Sturdy tie down points
Lifetime manufacture warranty
Lockable (2x additional locking tabs on door for extra security)
Cons:
Expensive
Takes up more space than similar internal size crate
Significantly heavier than similar size crate
Not collapsible for transport or storage
Option 2: IMPACT Collapsible Dog Crate
Here's a crate that's earned a nod of approval from the dog training community.
Crafted from robust aluminium, this lightweight crate doesn't compromise on sturdiness. Collapsible at the drop of a hat, it boasts two convenient carry handles and the structural prowess to be neatly stacked, one atop the other.
Tailor-made for the globetrotters and those seeking a sturdy, packable companion for their adventures or when going to competitions, this crate is the answer.
And here's a bonus…
There are specialised models catering to specific needs, such as the high anxiety crate designed to help with your dog's anxiety levels by minimising your dogs inputs from outside the crate. Like the Gunner, this also comes with accessories like a fan and water bowl.
A minor note of caution: due to its construction, this crate might generate a bit of noise as your dog manoeuvres within it. However, when in transit, it doesn’t rattle, and it’s clear the design prioritises integrity.
Pros:
Set up In 60 seconds
Easy carrying handle
Ventilated for optimal airflow
One-handed operation
Light weight
Collapsible for transport
Lifetime guarantee
10yr dog damage warranty (only on high anxiety crate)
Cons:
Expensive
Due to its construction is loud when dog moves around inside
Provides no insulation from outside temperatures
Not crash tested
Option 3: Snooza – Dog – 2 in 1 – Convertible Graphite Training Crate
Meet the ever-reliable Old Faithful.
This is the go-to crate that marks the starting line for many.
Fashioned from wire, this crate is simple – easily collapsible, lightweight, and featuring a removable tray for easy cleaning, making it a training haven for those lively puppies.
Ideal for those embarking on their crate journey, it's a budget-friendly option that opens the door to the world of dog ownership. A perfect fit for your home sanctuary, where you can unwind and dedicate time to shaping your pup into the perfect companion.
What makes it stand out? Well, you can take off the doors if you fancy turning it into a cozy den for your pup to chill.
Now, a word of caution for those with high-anxiety or high-drive four-legged raptors in the family – this might not be the crate for you.
While it stands strong, the construction and materials can make it unsuitable, with potential escape route for the determined ones, and the latches aren't built to withstand a beating. This isn't a dig at the design; it's just a heads-up on the ideal use case for this particular style of crate.
Pros:
Low cost
Light weight
Collapsible
Great ventilation
Removable tray for cleaning
Removable doors for a kennel transformation
Cons:
High drive or anxious dogs can easily escape
Provides no protection in car accident
No insulation from outside temperatures
Furniture Crate
Now, let's talk luxury – furniture crates. They're a statement piece and a permanent fixture all in one. But, fair warning, they're not cheap. Yet, the aesthetic payoff is downright incredible.
Made to suit all sizes
Permanent setups that feel like they were meant to be there
Can be designed to have drawers for all your pup’s needs
Customisable
Option 1: Kustom Kennels
For aficionados of all things custom, your search ends here.
Behold, handmade furniture crates meticulously crafted to seamlessly blend into your home, becoming an integral part of the household aesthetic. Whether catering to multiple canine companions or a solitary pooch, these crates, constructed with a blend of wood and steel, not only serve their purpose but also add a touch of elegance.
Crafted for the dog owner with a distinct vision, these crates are the epitome of merging dog ownership seamlessly with living spaces. If you don't mind splurging a bit for your pup or if you simply revel in providing your furry friend with a posh retreat, look no further – this is the crate tailored to your taste.
But, a word to the wise– while these custom crates are fantastic, exercise caution if your pup hasn't fully embraced the idea of crate comfort just yet. It might be wise to hold off until they're joyfully accustomed to chilling in a crate. After all, repairs for these personalised gems can venture into the pricey realm, particularly if you're dealing with a chewer. Keep in mind that the warranty only covers shipping and any build defects for a limited time, emphasising the need for a well-settled canine occupant before investing in this upscale retreat.
Pros:
Custom design available
Looks great
Can be made to have storage
Multiple crates in one
Cons:
Expensive
Costly to repair
Limited warranty
Not great for training
Conclusion
Well, thats my 2 cents on dog crates.
Whether you lean towards practicality with soft or hard crates or embrace luxury with furniture crates, or both, your choice reflects your lifestyle and requirements for your pup.
