Hello and welcome back to the Lead & Collar Blog, where our goal is to provide high value education and resources for beginner dog owners.

Taking care of a dog is a big responsibility, but it is also incredibly rewarding.

Dogs bring so much joy and love into our lives, and it is our duty to ensure that they are happy and healthy.

In this blog article, we will discuss the ultimate dog care routine, consisting of six simple steps that will help you keep your pup in great shape.

From feeding and grooming to exercise and mental stimulation, we will cover it all.

So, let's dive in….

Step 1: Proper Nutrition

Feeding your dog a balanced and nutritious diet is the foundation of good health.

Thats great but what does that mean?

Make sure to choose a high-quality dog food that is appropriate for your dog's breed, age, and size. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the right portion sizes and feeding schedule.

Not all dog foods are created equal so check out the ingredients list to be sure. Take a look at these 2 blogs by Stayloyal and TPLO INFO to see some things to avoid in dog food.

Be cautious of overfeeding or giving too many treats, as this can lead to obesity and other health issues.

Always provide fresh water for your dog to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Step 2: Regular Exercise

Like humans, dogs need regular exercise to stay fit and maintain a healthy weight.

Daily walks or runs are essential for your dog's physical and mental well-being. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.

But remember that certain breeds may require more activity.

My wife and I walk our boxer, Waylon, twice a day and because we work from home we always find time to play during the day.

Playtime with toys or interactive games can also provide mental stimulation while burning off energy.

Be consistent with your exercise routine, and your pup will thank you for it.

Step 3: Grooming and Hygiene

Proper grooming is crucial for your dog's overall health and well-being.

Regular brushing helps remove loose hair, prevent matting throughout the coat.It also gives you an opportunity to check for any skin issues and parasites (also keeps your house clean).

Aim to bath every 4-8 weeks depending on their coat, using a dog-specific shampoo and conditioner.

Don't forget about dental care! Brush your dog's teeth regularly to prevent dental problems and bad breath.

Lastly, trim their nails to keep them comfortable and prevent overgrowth.

Step 4: Routine Veterinary Care

Regular visits to the veterinarian are essential for maintaining your dog's health.

Schedule annual check-ups for vaccinations and to address any concerns or potential health issues.

Your veterinarian can also provide advice on parasite prevention, diet and breed concerns.

Having a good relationship with your veterinarian will help your dog receive the best care through their life.

Step 5: Mental Stimulation

Dogs are intelligent creatures that thrive on mental stimulation.

Boredom can lead to destructive behaviour, so it's important to keep your pup's mind engaged.

Provide them with puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys that require problem-solving skills.

But.....

All the toys in the world wont provide stimulation if your dog wont play with them.

Dogs are social animals thats why I’m a strong believer in play-time and training sessions.

Teach them new tricks or commands to challenge their brains.

Interactive playtime with you or other dogs can also provide mental stimulation/socialisation.

A mentally stimulated dog is a happy and well-behaved dog.

Step 6: Lots of Love and Attention

Last but certainly not least, dogs need lots of love and attention from their human companions.

Set aside dedicated time each day to bond with your dog through petting, cuddling, and playtime.

Dogs are pack animals, and being a part of your family is essential for their emotional well-being. Show them affection and praise when they behave well, and provide appropriate discipline when needed.

A loving and nurturing environment will help your dog feel safe, secure, and truly loved.
